About Growler Visuals

Capturing truth, inspiring change, one story at a time.

Storyteller Through Film & Journalism

Growler Visuals was founded in 2007 by Wil Weldon (as Growler Productions) with the beginning of production for Pass It On, a documentary about Reynolds Price’s teaching career at Duke University. Growler Visuals has come to embody far more than a single feature-length documentary. It’s now a vehicle for empowering stories of innovation and celebrating education, the arts, the sciences, and human achievement.

Why “Growler”?

Great question! Growler was the “trail name” Wil used when he conducted his through-hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2001. Wil was known only as “Growler” to hundreds of people he encountered during those six challenging months. (It had something to do with noises he made when he ate, but he’s much more civilized these days.) Wil kept the name because that journey was when he fully realized that non-fiction video storytelling was what he wanted to do with his life, more than anything else.

What now?

Growler Visuals is a vehicle for helping organizations, businesses, and individuals to have their stories fully realized in ways that make big waves for them. Much of it is about “collaborative ethnography,” an approach to documentary that allows the subjects to be part of how the story is told, and to represent them as they would like to be represented.

We are a multi-platform visual media production company, specializing in non-fiction videos and visual messaging. We usually keep extremely lean production teams to streamline processes and to ensure that our clients don’t have to remember lots of names and roles. This also helps to keep budgets and deadlines in check.
