Storyteller Through Film & Journalism
Wil Weldon is a video journalist, producer, author, director, interviewer, project organizer, and skilled communicator. He finds the true story and tells it as clearly as possible. Underlying all his work is a conviction to improve the world, one story at a time.
“I’ve always considered myself a writer and have been making films and videos of many stripes since the late ’80s.” Wil grew up in a small town in NC, graduated from Duke University with a degree in English, a certificate in Film & Video, and earned a Master’s in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Since 2007, he has operated Growler Visual Media. He has completed four feature-length documentaries about his “through-hike” of the entire Appalachian Trail in 2001, his brother’s conversion to (non-fundamentalist, Sufi) Islam, author Reynolds Price’s 50-plus-year career as a teacher, and “Rarefied,” about families with rare genetic diseases. He has a dog, no kids, very little debt, and a strong disdain for the Western status quo. Cycling, running, swimming, hiking, and many other outdoor activities help to keep him fit and sane.

INNERviewing: Heart Forward Storytelling
Heart Forward Storytelling is about an approach to interviewing that integrates some of the philosophy behind the healing art of Reiki with journalistic storytelling techniques. This book also includes autobiographical episodes in which the author gleaned insights into conversational and interviewing processes. Intended as an educational or practical guide to holistic communication, it also includes exercises for readers to begin contemplating their own journey with the art of conversation and interviewing.
Some of the anecdotes explaining how the author arrived at certain understandings include encounters with Reynolds Price, Jane Goodall, Al Franken, Shaykh Hassan Cisse (of Senegal), and Mike Mills (of REM). The recollections serve to offer the audience validation of the author’s varied experiences and to represent the approach of Heart Forward Storytelling within many different contexts and disciplines.
The audience of this book is intended not exclusively for people wanting a better approach to journalism or storytelling. As stated at the end of the introduction, “It is written for anyone who wants to draw out something genuine (and spoken) from another person — to create the conditions where real, unguarded honesty can emerge. Interviewing, in one form or another, is practiced across an enormous range of professions and pursuits.”
